Takata Airbag Recall

The Takata airbag recall applies to certain model, makes and years of vehicles. Each manufacturer is tasked with alerting vehicle owners of the recall and any necessary follow up action.

Currently, recalls for vehicles with Takata airbags are in effect in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition, some manufacturers have announced recalls in other states:

  • BMW has recalled approximately 140,000 Takata driver-side airbags in BMW 3 Series vehicles made from January 2004 – August 2006 in the U.S. Previously, only about 12,000 vehicles in Florida, Hawaii and Puerto Rico had been subject to the recall. 1
  • Chrysler is recalling passenger-side airbag inflators in selected 2003 Ram pickup trucks sold or registered in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan, and the Virgin Islands. 2
  • Ford is recalling airbag components in certain Ford Rangers and Ford GTs that were originally sold in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as vehicles in high-humidity areas within Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and the U.S. territories of Guam, Saipan, and American Samoa. 3
  • Honda has recalled driver’s side Takata airbags in its vehicles in all 50 states. 4

Finding if Your Vehicle is Part of the Takata Recall

Each vehicle manufacturer is handling the Takata airbag recall in its own way. By regulation, manufacturers are required to notify affected owners of the recall.

Consumers can check their vehicle’s VIN against the database provided on the vehicle manufacturer’s website. For other questions about the recall, vehicle owners can call the NHTSA’s Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
